While the internal combustion engine isn't going anywhere any time soon, it's abundantly clear that electric vehicles are the future. With this in mind, Volvo intends to convert at least half of its lineup to electric power by 2025. And in late-2020/early-2021, Volvo will make its first major step towards that goal with the release of its first-ever fully electric production vehicle, the 2021 XC40 Recharge P8.

Volvo has long been on the cutting edge of alternative energy vehicles, beginning with the V60 PHEV wagon in 2013. That powertrain eventually morphed into the T8 plug-in hybrid, which combines a turbo and supercharged 2.0-liter engine with an electric motor to produce 400 horsepower and 472 pound-feet of torque. For 2021, that powertrain has been renamed "Recharge" and can be found on models like the S60 and S90 sedans and the XC60 and XC90 SUVs. But for the 2021 XC40, the Recharge name means something even more exciting.

Prodigious Power, Zero Emissions

The Volvo XC40 Recharge features a 75kW battery pack and an electric motor on each axle, which, combined, generate an exhilarating 408 horsepower and 487 pound-feet of torque. With its impressive power-to-weight ratio, the XC40 Recharge boasts a Volvo-estimated zero-to-60 time of just 4.7 seconds. Volvo asserts that the 2021 Recharge can travel more than 200 miles on a single charge, and can charge its battery to 80-percent in only 40 minutes with a 150-kW DC fast charger.

Like all XC40 models, the Recharge P8 delivers versatile and luxurious accommodations and a wide range of premium amenities to enhance the experience.
